For a long time, agriturismo (loosely, Italian “farm-stays”) have been Italy’s best-kept accommodation secret. At least, until now. Even the well-heeled Travel + Leisure recently got in on the game, calling agriturismi Italy’s “best affordable spots” and listing seven of the best.
But what, exactly, is an agriturismo? Well, yes — it’s a “farm-stay.” But it’s also much, much more… and, we think, the best way to experience Italy’s countryside!
Typically, an agriturismo is an independently-owned farm that the owners have decided to use partially — although usually only partially — for accommodation purposes. That means that, 90 percent of the time, you can expect that the owners of your “hotel” are, primarily, farmers. (Or people who have someone else farm for them). Your room is in the farm’s house, or an annex built nearby. Rooms also completely range, from large, independently-built mini-apartments to cozy, basic rooms in the bigger house.
A few notes on the Wineries/Agriturismo
Fattoria Corzano e Paterno the vineyards of the Fattoria Corzano e Paterno lie on the steep and stony slopes surrounding the fortified farmhouse “Corzano” in San Casciano Val di Pesa. Roughly seventeen km south of Florence, the property runs along the ancient Via Cassia and the River “Pesa” which separates our land from the “Classico” region of Chianti. It stretches out over two hills covered with vineyards, olive trees andwoodland. The historic Villa Paterno, acquired from the Machiavelli family, together with the farm houses on the property, have been restored with great care to their original form.
The AGRITURISMOis comprised of four country large houses, for holiday rental, positioned in pristine locations amid cypresses, olive groves and vineyards, views that have escaped the passage of time, and are reached by unpaved country roads. Their restoration has maintained, except for modern kitchens and baths, the original structures of beamed ceilings, open sit-in fireplaces and large, airy rooms. Situated in this classic Tuscan landscape, near fields of our grazing sheep, the houses overlook the verdant valley that lies between the two distinctive hills of the farm.
Paitin Estate: started in 1796 when Benedetto Elia purchased the farmstead with outlying wine cellar and vineyards. His son Giuseppe extended at a later stage vineyards and acquired the underground cellar, dating back to the XV century.
Barbaresco del Sori Paitin wine started production in 1893 while wine export started already in 1898. In1965 the estate increased productivity when Secondo Pasquero-Elia added a new wine cellar, and started replanting gradually vineyards and acquiring new vines.
The farmhouse has been renovated from an old agricultural residence dating back to the 17th century, transformed into a winery producing wines such as Barbaresco, Barbera and Nebbiolo to name just a few. Surrounded by a beautiful garden with an outdoor pool and bbq facilities, Paitin Agriturismo offers accommodation in rooms, mini-apartments or suites, all equipped with every comfort, with bathroom and private parking. Paitin is in the countryside just a 10-minute drive from the center of Alba, while Bra is a 20-minute away. Due to the limited number of rooms available at Paitin if necessary another Agriturismo Cascina Rebelot may also be used www.cascinarabalot.it
